In My Mailbox (108) Black Friday Edition!

In My Mailbox
IMM is a weekly meme hosted and created by Kristi at
The Story Siren and was inspired by Alea at Pop Culture Junkie.

Free for Kindle
~The Pearl Savage by Tamara Rose Blodgett
~The Soulkeepers by G.P. Ching
~Raven by Suzy Turner

I also braved the Black Friday crowd at Walmart. Okay, that's not entirely true. I mean it was crowded as heck and two women got in a fight over some sheets but my mom and I were out with are stuff before it actually was Friday since some stuff went on sale at 10PM. I came away with:

DVDs for $1.96 (Walmart)
~Australia (Kidman & Jackman)
~Going the Distance (Barrymore)
~The Princess Bride (Pretty sure you all know which one I mean.)
~He's Just Not That Into You (You know, that movie with everyone in it)
~Unknown (Liam Neeson)
~The Time Traveler's Wife (Once again, what other movie could this be?)

DVDs for $5 (Walmart)
~Sherlock Holmes

DVDs for $9 (Walmart)
~Water for Elephants

I also got two pair (one black, one purple) of Isotoner suede gloves for about $7 each. Sorry there aren't pictures but I've searched the house time and time again and can neither find my charger for my batteries or batteries with enough juice to actually work in my little camera. (Big one is at dorm.) In the meantime, I'm on my last day of Thanksgiving Break and I'm sick as a dog with a fever. Four hour ride back to college tomorrow should fun. *cough* NOT! *cough* >_>

Anyhow, hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving and got some great stuff this week! :D

Indie Giveaway: Anomaly by K.C. King!

Anomaly by K.C. King
Publisher: Self published.
Pub. Date: October 25th, 2011
Pages: 214
Series: The Tri-Realms Saga, #1
Age Level: Upper YA

Synopsis via Goodreads
“I was transfixed as I watched him; his skin was simply luminous in the sunlight, yet not a bead of sweat sheened his face. I could have remained entranced by him for hours, for in this state he was simply magnificent, almost – supernatural. The spontaneous thought raised goose bumps on my arms as I saw him – I recognised him – for the first time. It wasn’t that there was something unusual about Sebastian, it was that he was entirely unusual. He was beyond human.”

22-year-old Bree Spencer hates prejudice of all kinds – especially the blatant elitism she is subjected to as a resident staffer at her aunt’s exclusive estate, Blackall Manor. So when Bree nearly winds up as road-kill on account of the wealthy Sebastian Templeton, she struggles to reconcile her inexplicable attraction to him. On the surface Sebastian epitomises all that Bree usually despises, yet her draw to him is irrefutable.

Events become decidedly more unusual upon Sebastian’s arrival as a guest at Blackall Manor. Despite her reservations, Bree finds Sebastian intriguing; but his insistence to get to know her triggers a raft of niggling suspicions – heightened by a series of strange dreams and phenomena – until eventually, she learns the truth.

Sebastian is a guardian, a powerful descendant of a sacred ethereal line; and Bree’s uncanny gift has prompted him to find her. But while an anomaly inspired their connection, an ancient prophecy and ethereal lore forbid it. And with Sebastian’s purist brother determined to honour both at any cost, an epic battle with unthinkable stakes could be Bree’s only chance at survival.

Unison Spark Blog Tour: Guest Post from Andy Marino

I was recently asked to be a part of the Blog Tour put together to celebrate the release of Unsion Spark by Andy Marino. So today I have for you all a guest post from the author. Enjoy. :D

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Guest Post
by Andy Marino
It seems like every time a city hosts the Olympics and draws the eyes of the world, it suddenly becomes a squeaky-clean poverty-free utopia. This doesn’t happen by magic: I remember reports of homeless people being given one-way bus tickets out of Atlanta before the games, as long as they agreed to never return. More recently, Beijing expelled migrant workers and cracked down on “undesirable” businesses. Governments like to play coy about these clean-up efforts, but there’s no mistaking them for what they really are: relocation projects designed to make one economic class of people invisible to another.
In UNISON SPARK, Eastern Seaboard City is divided by a massive canopy that separates sleek residences from the slums. Special IDs are required to move between sections, with horrible penalties imposed upon those caught sneaking from the subcanopy zones to the topside world.
This out-of-sight/out-of-mind attitude applies to the social network, too: logging in to Unison costs money, and subcanopy residents are denied access. It isn’t just pictures and status updates on a screen – it’s a fully immersive experience that reacts to a user’s likes and dislikes and changes itself accordingly. The social network isn’t all harmless fun, of course (you’ll have to read the book if you want to see its creepy side), but to the middle and upper classes it sure seems like a wonderful place.
When I was figuring out how these worlds were going to work, I thought about my own experiences as a city person. (New York City is probably the ignoring-people capital of the world, and I’ve been living there for eleven years). It’s easy for me to feel disgusted at the thought of exiling people on a massive scale just because they ruin the look of a nice downtown tourist area. But in a way, I make people in my city invisible, too. I’ve spent years training myself not to see, and now my own brand of mental relocation is practically automatic. Sometimes I have to remind myself to acknowledge another human being, because the reflex is to ignore.
I’m no psychologist, but I’m pretty sure it should be the other way around.
Guest Post: Jus Accardo
Hello everyone! Today I have for all of you a great guest post from debut author Jus Accardo, who just recently released her YA novel, Touch.
About Jus:
Jus Accardo is the author of YA paranormal romance and urban fantasy fiction. A native New Yorker, she lives in the middle of nowhere with her husband, three dogs, and sometimes guard bear, Oswald. Her first book, Touch, is due out in November 2011 from Entangled Publishing. She is represented by Kevan Lyon of Marsal Lyon Literary Agency.
Voices in my Head
by Jus Accardo
One of the first bits of feedback I received when TOUCH started making the rounds was what an amazing voice Dez had. Fresh, unique, edgy… These were all words I heard. I thought, huh. Cool. And that was pretty much it. I didn’t dwell on it or obsess. I didn’t pick it apart or over analyze. It just was what it was. Dez’s voice.
A few weeks ago I had a writer friend come to me and ask how I’d done it. She asked me to give her tips on how to make her individual characters stand apart from each other. I’ll admit it. I just kinda sat there like a deer in headlights. You wanna know how I did it? I have no clue. I just did.
So I gave it a lot of thought and boiled it down to the one thing I think helped most. (keep in mind the only thing in this world that I’m an expert is being a klutz—I’ve broken more bones than an X-gamer—so this is just my take on things)
Listen.
I’m not saying you should intrude on people’s conversations—though to be honest, I’ve heard some pretty weird stuff. There was a conversation I had the misfortune to overhear a few nights ago about a monkey, a bar of soap, and a blow up doll that I still can’t shake… But the key is to really pay attention to the way people talk. The real way people talk.
Most people don’t walk around spouting flowery purple prose. How do you do? Probably isn’t the standard greeting for this decade (I’m picturing Eliza Doolittle in that big hat—yes I’m an old movie fan ) Nowadays people are more likely to greet you with a simple hello or hey. Everyone has their own way of speaking. Most people have comfort phrases or words they use on a daily basis. Things that are unique to their individual voice. I had a friend who constantly used the word *twitch* pimpin. It was his thing. I know a girl who, instead of cursing, says crappers. That's her thing. If you pay close enough attention, everyone has a thing.
If you’re writing YA, listen to teenagers. I’m sure it’s not unheard of, but for the most part, it’s uncommon for teens to say things like flabbergasted and terrific. Each generation has its own language. Listen to it. Learn it. If it doesn't feel authentic, then people aren't going to connect with the characters.
What about you? Do you have any things? Something unique to your personal voice that might show through on paper (or screen) and distinguish you from others?
E-Book Giveaway: Break Away by Tatiana Vila
Break Away by Tatiana Vila
Publisher: Smashwords
Pub. Date: October 10th, 2011
Pages: 306
Series: Away, #1
Age Level: YA
Synopsis via Goodreads
Ice Queen. That's what everyone calls Dafne at school. The girl with the striking looks of a Raven Princess but whose cold-steeled touch freezes everyone in her way. Her reputation works for her and she even likes it. People don't mess with her—except for her sister's infuriatingly handsome boyfriend, Ian, who loves pushing her subzero temper to its limits.
Life in Berryford is flowing exactly as she wants it—no drama, no boy trying to get into her pants—until she starts noticing odd, glazed-eyed students everywhere. Something weird is happening and, unusual enough for her, she needs to find out why. But when people start falling into a coma with no reason, among them Dafne's sister, she decides to take the matter in her hands, because if her intuition is right, this isn't something doctors or virologists can fight. This is something…more.
With frustration and guilt leading her way, and Ian forcing himself to her side, Dafne will step onto a road that'll open her eyes to why ignorance is bliss, why hate is so close to love, and why our imagination might be the most dangerous weapon ever known.
Author Guest Post: Taryn Browning
Hello everyone! Today I have a guest post from Taryn Browning discussing the musical motivation and inspiration behind her newest YA book, Dark Seeker. Enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Playlist for Dark Seeker
Taryn Browning

I like to listen to music when I write. The types of music I choose for my playlists are based on the mood of the scene, chapter, or story. Many times my playlists consist of Rock and Alternative, since I write urban fantasy and paranormal romance. Here are the songs I listened to when I wrote/edited Dark Seeker. They include some of my favorite bands – Paramore, 30 Seconds to Mars, Lesley Roy, Daughtry & Lifehouse…

Ghost of Me by Daughtry

Feeling Sorry by Paramore
Arise by Flyleaf
Thinking Out Loud by Lesley Roy
Smoke and Mirrors by Lifehouse
Turn It Off by Paramore
Hurricane by 30 Seconds to Mars
You Don’t Belong by Daughtry
Cut by Plumb
Let the Flames Begin by Paramore
Imaginary Enemy by Circa Survive
Your Call by Secondhand Serenade
Closer to the Edge by 30 Seconds to Mars
All We Have by Anberlin

~~~~~~~~~~~~
I gotta say Taryn, great taste in music. 'Course, I say that cause I really like a lot of those myself. lol. Thanks for the post.
And readers, I hope you all enjoyed this post, maybe found something new to listen to? Or read, perhaps? ;) Would love to hear your thoughts. And don't forget to check out Taryn's book, Dark Seeker.
Indie Author Interview: Tatiana Vila
Today I would to like to introduce you all to Tatiana Vila, a lovely indie author who has just recently released her 2nd YA book, Break Away, following her debut, The Ylem.
~~~~~~~~~~

TBP: Tell us a little bit about yourself.

TV: I graduated from a French high school in El Salvador, Cental America, and got a Bachelor's degree in Hotel Management from the Institut Vatel in Nimes (a well-known University in the south of France). Yes, I know what you're thinking. What's up with all this French stuff in her life? Well, I actually have no answer to that. Lol. But I do love the language. I guess that's one of the main reasons.

I can speak four languages: Spanish, English, French and Portuguese. But as you can see, I've chosen to write books in English because I absolutely love this language. It's more playful and fun to write. And why, you may be wondering, did I change my career's path and immersed myself in the publishing business? Because for the first time in my life I'm listening to my heart, and my heart tells me this is my true path, my true passion. Cheesy, I know. But so true :)

TBP: Describe both The Ylem and Break Away in nine words or less each.

TV: The Ylem: suspenseful, mysterious, romantic, heartbreaking, exciting, fantastic, lovely, dramatic.

Break Away:
mysterious, fantastic, witty, romantic, sexually tense, stirring, eye-opener, innovative.

TBP: What is it like designing your own book covers and which is your favorite?

TV: Designing my book covers is just as amazing as writing my own books. It's just another way of putting your creative juices to work. Luckily, my creative skills in this department are quite good (I like myself to believe) and don't need of another designer to do it for me, which is wonderful money-wise and time-wise :)

Even though I did it in collaboration with Kizuna-chan (another amazing graphic artist), until now, my favorite cover has to be Break Away.

TBP: So, I hear someone likes to sing in the shower. Anything particular?

TV: Busted! No, not really. Almost everyone knows this little infatuation I have with showers and vocal cords. There's just something about the bathroom's acoustics and water pouring over my head that ignites these 'lyrical outbursts' in me. It's my favorite place in the world to sing.

Adele's songs have to be my favorite, but sometimes Price Tag by Jessie J and Skycrapper by Demi Lovato sneak in. Okay, okay. To be honest, Today I don't Feel Like Doing Anything by Bruno Mars is my favorite. Perfect song to begin the day, don't you think?

TBP: You have to change your name to that of one of the planets. Which do you pick?

TV: Andromeda or Sirius. I know they're not planets, but I don't want to be too obvious and say Venus like everyone else :)

TBP: For the next week you have to live off of one particular food, which is unfortunate, but you get to choose which food that is. What do you pick?

TV: Spaghetti Bolognese! Protein and carbs in one dish. Perfect.

TBP: When having trouble with writer's block, what is your favorite thing to do to help clear it away?

TV: Watching movies and listening to music usually help my creative juices to get going again.

TBP: If you could co-write a book with any author, past or present, who would it be and why?

TV: Richelle Mead or Chloe Neill. Their writing is pure genius. Just go and grab any of their books and you'll see what I'm talking about.

TBP: Anything else you'd like to say before you go?

TV: Reading books is one of the most wonderful things we have as human beings, but you should never forget that the most beautiful thing we have is the real world out there. Enjoy it, cherish it and never stop smiling. And above all, love everyone without holding back. Life is all about that after all ;)
~~~~~~~~~
A big thanks to Tatiana for letting me interview her. I hope you all enjoyed the interview! Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments. And don't forget to check out Tatiana's books!
